STEP 1
Position a country in the transition framework
In the figure below, each point represents a country’s mortality levels in 2020 according to UN estimates, with the plot background colored to denote the five phases of the integrated mortality transition framework. As countries progress through the transition framework, they generally move from the top-right portion of the plot towards the bottom-left section. Bangladesh's position is shown in orange, with the arrow indicating how Bangladesh moved through this framework over the previous two decades.
From 2000 to 2020, Bangladesh progressed from late phase 1 to mid phase 3. This substantial decline in mortality - which outpaced what would have been expected based on Bangladesh's economic development alone - made the country an Exemplar in NMR/MMR reduction. By scrolling over the figure below, you can see the maternal mortality, neonatal mortality, and stillbirth levels in for each country, including Bangladesh.

STEP 2
Assess country performance across key indicators
Once a country is positioned in a phase of the transition framework, we can assess its performance on a series of key indicators, specifically benchmarking these values compared to what is typical for its phase. This process can help identify which indicators may be a priority for a country as it looks to advance to the next phase. The figure below includes twenty indicators that are associated with progress along the integrated mortality transition framework, grouped into six categories: fertility decline, increased health service coverage, narrowing equity gaps, expanded health workforce, socio-political factors, and health financing and economic development. The indicators are colored based on Bangladesh's performance in comparison to what is typical for its phase. You can learn more about Bangladesh's performance on each indicator by hovering over the figure below.

While each of the factors shown in the figure above are associated with mortality reduction across all five phases of the transition framework, several tend to show particularly marked effects within specific phases. For example, fertility decline is shown in the left column and is mostly strongly associated with progress for countries advancing through phases 1 and 2. The next column, increased health service uptake, includes several indicators that typically experience rapid improvements throughout phases 2 and 3. Ultimately, advancements through phases 4 and 5 are also associated with more equitable care and expanded health workforces as improving services for hard-to-reach communities becomes vital for achieving further mortality reductions. In the section below, you can further assess Bangladesh's performance on any of these indicators. This may be particularly relevant for indicators that Bangladesh is not on track for given its current phase.

Evaluate and compare country progress
